Free Hindi Typing Test (CPCT) & English WPM Test

UdaanPath's typing test covers both Hindi typing practice for CPCT and government exams and a classic English WPM speed test. Hindi typing works on any regular English keyboard — no Hindi language pack or IME installation needed — with your choice of the Remington Gail or Inscript keyboard layout. Used daily by CPCT, SSC, Railway, Banking, and State PSC aspirants, plus students, job seekers, and remote workers checking their English typing speed. No account, no download — just pick a mode and start typing.

Hindi Typing Test for CPCT & Government Exams

The CPCT (Computer Proficiency Certification Test) and most other government Hindi typing exams require candidates to type in Unicode Hindi using the Mangal font, keyed on the Remington Gail layout, at a minimum speed and accuracy benchmark. Our Hindi typing test tracks the same numbers examiners look for:

MetricCPCT Standard
Hindi typing speed8,000 keystrokes/hour (KPH)
English typing speed5,000 keystrokes/hour (KPH)
Minimum accuracy95%
FontMangal (Unicode Devanagari)
Keyboard layoutRemington Gail (Inscript also accepted by some exams)

Your live KPH and accuracy are shown while you type, and the results screen tells you exactly how far you are from the 8,000 KPH CPCT target.

How to Practice Hindi Typing — No Software Needed

Most Hindi typing tools require you to install a Hindi IME or enable a language pack before you can type a single character. UdaanPath remaps your regular English keyboard directly, so you can start practicing immediately in three steps:

  • 1. Drill: Untimed, one key at a time. Learn exactly where every Hindi letter lives on Remington Gail or Inscript, with the key highlighted on-screen.
  • 2. Practice: Untimed, full paragraphs. Build muscle memory at your own pace with live accuracy feedback and no countdown pressure.
  • 3. Test: Timed 30s–3min tests that mirror the real exam, with live KPH tracked against the CPCT 8,000 KPH benchmark.

What is a good typing speed (WPM)?

WPM RangeLevelWhat it means
Under 20 WPMBeginnerJust getting started — hunt-and-peck typing
20–35 WPMBelow avgCommon for casual typists; most jobs need faster
35–50 WPMAverageTypical for adults who type regularly
50–70 WPMAbove avgComfortable for most office and admin jobs
70–90 WPMFastProfessional typist level; great for any desk job
90–120 WPMExpertTop tier — transcriptionists, coders, court reporters
120+ WPMLegendaryElite — top 1% of all typists worldwide

* Average adult typing speed is 40 WPM. Professional typists average 65–75 WPM. The world record exceeds 212 WPM.

How to improve your typing speed

  • Use all 10 fingers: Learn touch typing — assign each finger to specific keys using the home row (ASDF / JKL;). Never use fewer than 8 fingers.
  • Practice daily: 10–15 minutes of focused daily practice beats long infrequent sessions. Muscle memory takes time — consistency is everything.
  • Accuracy before speed: Aim for 98%+ accuracy first. Speed is a natural result of accuracy. Rushing and making errors actually slows you down over time.
  • Never look at your keyboard: Train your fingers to find keys by feel. F and J have bumps — use them as anchors. This is the biggest single habit that unlocks speed.
  • Use the 2-minute test: Longer tests reveal endurance problems and bad habits. Start with 30s tests, work up to 2–3 minutes as your base improves.
  • Fix your posture: Sit upright, elbows at desk height, wrists slightly elevated. Poor posture causes fatigue that limits speed and can cause RSI.

How WPM is calculated

WPM is calculated using the industry-standard formula: every 5 characters = 1 word, regardless of actual word length. This normalizes results across different passage difficulties.

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ (elapsed seconds ÷ 60)

Only correctly typed characters count toward your WPM. Errors reduce accuracy but do not remove characters from your WPM count if corrected with Backspace.

Who needs a fast typing speed?

  • CPCT, SSC, Railway, Banking, and State PSC candidates — Hindi typing is a scoring or qualifying round in most of these exams
  • Data entry clerks and government office staff (many posts require a minimum KPH/WPM to qualify)
  • Remote workers — faster typing = higher output per hour
  • Software developers — faster typing means less context switching
  • Writers, journalists, bloggers — speed compounds across thousands of articles
  • Customer support agents who handle live chat
  • Court reporters and medical transcriptionists (100+ WPM required)

About this typing test

UdaanPath's typing test includes 20 Hindi passages (Government, General, Motivational, Business, and Tech topics) on both Remington Gail and Inscript layouts, plus 38 English passages across six categories — so every session feels fresh. Hindi mode offers three ways to practice: untimed Key Drill, untimed Practice, and a timed Test benchmarked against CPCT's 8,000 KPH standard. English mode offers timed tests from 30 seconds to 3 minutes with a built-in finger placement guide. All tests run entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server.
